DIY $4 Door Mat Porch Update

Holla. Ok, insight into my weirdness... I feel the need to be different. But not so different that I'm the only one doing it.

Insert "DIY Holla Doormat."

So I bought this rug at Ikea way back before Christmas and knew I wanted to paint something on it. I scoured Pinterest and finally decided to do something simple, but more "me." I liked one that said "hello" in the lower corner, but it needed something. More oomph.

Then I found one that said "HOLLA!" YES!

First thing I did was gathered up the supplies. Painters tape (on hand), paint (50 cents), paint brush (on hand), and of course the rug (Ikea on sale for 3.50).  Next I taped off the edges... and obviously you can do any design you'd like to. This is just a play by play of what I did.

The paint I used was a sample jar I found on the clearance/reject table at Home Depot. Uhm. May be my new happy spot. So many colors that people just didn't like. So sad. I'll rescue them!! I mean come on... 50 cent paint???

Back to the rug.

Once I taped off the edges I started painting. The tape doesn't stick really well, so make sure you brush away from the tape edge. And use LOTS of paint. Like glob it on.

After realizing it would take too long to try to make a stencil for the wording (I am impatient!) I decided to just free hand it. Again, the key is LOTS of paint.

I let it dry for a few hours, and then pulled the tape off. The paint was still wet, but like I said, I'm impatient.

I think it turned out pretty good! And it looks kinda cute sitting on top of the steps by the front door!

Add a couple colorful planters (or matching ones if you're not as out there as me!) and wa-la! New front entry way!

Now to keep those plants alive. Let's take bets!

    1. I get a bunch of paint in the "oops" section at Home Depot. I liked the color so I grabbed it. Alas, there is no name for it as it was a mess up. Sorry!

  8. Why is HOLA spelled wrong??? This disturbs me greatly! As a Latina from South America, living & working & appreciating your great country, I hear so many North Americans complaining that us Latinos "don't never learn to talk proper American". Well. Huh. What's all THIS then?

    1. Hi anonymous. I'm sorry you took this the wrong way but it's actually not supposed to say "hola" but "holla." Like "holler." It's kind of slang I guess.
